It was a bright, warm Sunday morning (yes, a time before the great second winter of 2016) just a few weeks ago when Brooklyn-based illustrator, Catherine Willett invited me into her Park Slope home and studio. I barely had my foot in the door before she convinced me to bury myself in her original arrow pillows and have some breakfast- girl knows the way to my heart. After chatting over some espresso, we followed the sunlight into her magical studio full of everything black and gold and glowing where I got to see her ink delicate details onto paper.
Catherine Willett creates illustrated works in black and gold ink that draw inspiration from natural elements like the earth & moon, bones & gemstones, flora & fauna and anything she finds in her environment that speaks to her. She often carries her illustrations into the world of textile design, so you can wear them as a scarf or snag yourself a screenprinted pillow. After scrolling the photos from our studio session below, be sure to continue the journey with a visit to catherinewillett.com and be sure to check out the gift shop on your way out!
