Block Club describes their company as "the branding and strategy agency that wants better," and they are not lying to you. I know because I have had the pleasure to not only live in the city they call home, but also the opportunity to work with them creatively. Besides being branding and design gurus, they have long since been a community staple with City Dining Cards, the Creativity Series artist interviews, bi-monthy magazine and release parties , and the overall addition to the aesthetics and functionality of the city.
In less than two weeks, Block Club will celebrating 8 years and 40 issues of their publication. Today, they have sent that final issue #40 to press, but this isn't a sad event because the phasing out of the publication is only to make room for bigger and better things. In celebration and admiration of all their success, I'll be sharing some photo stories that I have been honored to have printed in their pages.
Last summer, I was asked to produce an editorial depicting a story by writer Woody Brown, "A Porous Border," which breaks down observations on living life in places that are so close and so similar, yet across the US-CA border and still so different. I was pretty excited when editor, Ben Siegel, came to me specifically for this photo story, because as a restless traveler and an observer of subtleties in environment, I knew I was the person to break these visual mysteries. Check out the slideshow to see what printed and some of my favorite outtakes and be sure to read Brown's story here on your way out!
